Faculty from the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (��Ӱ��) have earned national recognition and a $30,000 award through the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM) All In! Vegas Pitch Showdown, held at AACOM’s annual conference in April.

The ��Ӱ�� team was selected as a top innovator among osteopathic medical schools for its approach to technology-enabled medical education. The award-winning faculty team includes:

The team has directed the award to support AAICE Labs, part of the Alabama Artificial Intelligence Center of Excellence (AAICE), a long-standing ��Ӱ�� partner.

This recognition highlights the innovative work of our faculty and their commitment to leveraging technology to improve medical education and patient care. By investing this award into AAICE Labs, we are strengthening the infrastructure that enables collaboration, research, and expanded healthcare access in rural and medically underserved areas.

The funding will support the expansion of AAICE Labs’ technical capabilities, including the establishment of a dedicated facility in Auburn, Alabama. The lab is developing a secure data room with enhanced servers, storage systems, and network infrastructure. As part of this effort, AAICE is scaling its high-performance computing platform to support increased demand.

These upgrades enabled by this funding will:

Enable multiple users to simultaneously access advanced computing resources
Support the development of an efficient billing and user management system
Improve customer and research support capabilities
Expand capacity for collaborative academic and clinical projects

The AAICE Labs platform already supports ��Ӱ��’s Via Learning Management System (VLMS), which integrates medical education, patient monitoring, and care delivery. The platform also supports research collaborations with institutions including Tuskegee University, the University of South Alabama, and others, which have engaged with AAICE over the past three years.

In late March 2026, students and faculty from the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (��Ӱ��) traveled to Cape Coast, Ghana, for a week of immersive global health research focused on child nutrition. Working alongside partners at the University of Cape Coast, the team advanced an ongoing study supported by a ��Ӱ�� Research Excellence Award Program (REAP) grant, with seven ��Ӱ�� medical students assisting in data collection.

The international health research effort was led by ��Ӱ��-Virginia’s Bernard Kadio, MD, PhD, MPH, along with Amy Hicks, PhD, MPH, of ��Ӱ��-Carolinas and Jess Nicholson, MAT, MPH (C) of ��Ӱ��-Virginia, and included Caleb Bradberry, PhD, of Virginia Tech.

The vital initiative builds on a research partnership established in 2021 with Ghana’s national education and health services, focusing on child nutrition and population health. Recent UNICEF estimates show worsening childhood malnutrition in developing countries after COVID-19, contributing to 2.4 million child deaths in 2024 alone. During the weeklong visit, the team conducted fieldwork across 17 schools in the region, collecting data from nearly 800 children in second grade and below. Their work centered on assessing rates of malnutrition, specifically wasting and stunting, across different ages, sexes, and school environments.

This project represents a unique integration of emerging technology into field-based research and medical work. In addition to traditional tools designed to capture body measurements, the team designed and built a novel digital stadiometer for rapid and accurate height assessments in low-resource settings, and they were able to test and validate those results for the first time in the field. A mobile app enabled real-time nutritional assessment and data aggregation, while image data supported AI tools for early malnutrition diagnosis. The powerful combination of demographic, physical, and visual data places the study at the forefront of tech-driven global health research.

For participating students, the experience extended far beyond data collection. As ��Ӱ��-Virginia student Lea Lenker ‘28 shared, “Through this work, I strengthened my cultural humility and reaffirmed my lifelong commitment to improving health outcomes. I am especially grateful for the opportunity to put our cutting-edge nutritional assessment tools to the test in a real-world setting. Ultimately, this experience has shaped me into a more thoughtful, compassionate, and globally minded osteopathic medical student.”

Working in community settings, the group gained hands-on training while also developing adaptability and teamwork skills in dynamic environments. Just as importantly, the collaboration fostered meaningful cross-cultural exchange, deepening the understanding of the social and environmental factors shaping child health in Ghana.

“My experience on this trip reshaped how I understand health and the kind of physician I hope to become,” ��Ӱ��-Virginia student Paloma Ames-Zuniga ’29 said. “As a student researcher studying child malnutrition, I saw that health is deeply influenced by social determinants such as access to food, education, and community resources, and it taught me to see patients in the context of their lives, not just their disease.”

��Ӱ��-Carolinas’ Lily Logan ’29 also found the trip meaningful, “My experience in Ghana reinforced how fortunate I am to pursue a medical education and use it to investigate and address health disparities in underserved communities. It also gave me a deeper appreciation for the complexity of global health research and the importance of multidisciplinary teamwork and culturally competent approaches in creating meaningful, sustainable impact.”

Celeste Prado ’29, also from ��Ӱ��-Carolinas, reiterated the value of the experience, "Being able to participate in an international research study and collaborate with the University of Cape Coast has shown me the profound impact that cross-cultural partnerships have on advancing global health. It reinforced that working together across borders is absolutely essential for developing sustainable healthcare solutions."

Outside the research setting, the group engaged with the country’s history and natural environment. A visit to Cape Coast Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offered a sobering look at its role in the transatlantic slave trade. The team also explored Kakum National Park, where a canopy walkway high above the rainforest floor provided a striking view of Ghana’s biodiversity.

As the partnership with the University of Cape Coast continues to grow, ��Ӱ�� and its collaborators will seek additional funding to expand the project’s reach and further integrate innovative technologies. Their shared goal is to improve the assessment and management of pediatric malnutrition in underserved communities while training the next generation of globally minded healthcare professionals.

Addison Shenk ’26 is preparing for an anesthesia residency she has envisioned since childhood. Even as a student, she has already made a national impact.

Shenk recently earned top honors in the American Medical Association Research Challenge, standing out among more than 1,400 submissions. Her project examined the effectiveness of the training protocol for the ��Ӱ��-Virginia’s Narcan program.

At ��Ӱ��, first-year students are trained to administer Narcan, a medication that can reverse opioid overdoses and save lives. The training is part of a student-led initiative through the Overdose Prevention Task Force (OPTF), reflecting the College’s commitment to community health and hands-on learning. Shenk is a member of the 2025-2026 OTPF at ��Ӱ��-Virginia, along with Austin Gordon ’26 and Brooke Hipps ’26.

Shenk and her OPTF team had a question about the training: Does it actually work?

The standard protocol relies on lecture-based instruction. Shenk’s team wanted to know whether adding a simulation component would improve outcomes, so they created that component—with support from the excellent team in the ��Ӱ��-Virginia Simulation and Technology Center—and the results were clear. Students who trained with simulation demonstrated stronger retention of information, performed better in real-world scenarios, and reported greater confidence in their ability to respond during a real overdose.

In fact, she was surprised by how quickly those results came. “We saw results with that first group of students,” Shenk says. “Then we saw the same results with the second group of students. I kind of expected we would need a larger group of people before we started seeing some of these overarching themes, but the fact that it was so consistent, so off the bat, was really exciting.”

At ��Ӱ��, simulation is a cornerstone of the curriculum, preparing students for clinical rotations and patient care. Shenk’s research reinforces its value, showing that hands-on training strengthens both performance and confidence.

The project is also a testament to ��Ӱ��’s collaborative culture. Originally conceptualized by a previous group of student leaders, it has been carried forward by multiple classes, with ongoing data collection and analysis—a process that will continue in the years ahead. Faculty and staff, including leaders in the Simulation Center, have played a key role in supporting the work. “It’s very much a team effort,” Shenk says.

That continuity reflects a learning environment where students are encouraged to take ownership, ask meaningful questions, and build on the work of those who came before them. It’s also a community where students are supported by faculty during every part of their medical school journey.

Shenk’s path to ��Ӱ�� began close to home. A native of Harrisonburg, Virginia, she majored in biology at Eastern Mennonite University before choosing ��Ӱ�� for medical school. She describes the decision as a natural one, shaped by familiarity with the College and its graduates.

Once she arrived, she found a program that challenged her and prepared her for the realities of medicine. “The first two years are rigorous,” she says. “But that’s what prepares you for rotations and for what comes next.”

That preparation has paid off. As she enters residency, Shenk says she feels ready—not only to begin her training, but to contribute meaningfully from day one.

Her story highlights what sets ��Ӱ�� apart. Students are not only learning medicine; they are actively improving how it is taught and practiced. They are engaging in research that addresses real-world challenges, from rural health care access to the opioid crisis. And they are doing so within a community that values collaboration, accountability, and service.

Despite the clear results, Shenk says she was surprised the project won the AMA challenge. “I looked at a lot of the other projects, and they were so impressive,” she says. With some extra time during her fourth-year rotations, she submitted the abstract to see what might happen, but winning still feels surreal. “I’m really grateful that other people care about this topic,” she says. “It’s such an important thing that translates to many areas of medical education.”

As the research continues, Shenk hopes it may help shape how this training is delivered more broadly, ultimately improving overdose treatment and saving lives when seconds matter.

As she prepares to graduate, Shenk is grateful for her time at ��Ӱ��. “I feel prepared to be an intern and to be an anesthesia resident. I feel great about my medical school education at ��Ӱ��,” she says. “Clearly, it worked.”

For Justin Nguyen ’26, being named ��Ӱ��-Louisiana’s Student Researcher of the Year is both an honor and a reflection of years spent asking thoughtful questions, embracing persistence, and pursuing research that can advance patient care. His journey into medicine and research is deeply personal, shaped by family, curiosity, and a commitment to improving others' quality of life.

Originally from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Nguyen says his younger sister, Joelle, who has Down syndrome, has been one of the most influential forces in his life. Growing up alongside her shaped his view of patience, empathy, and individualized care. Watching his family work to optimize her health and life experiences sparked his early interest in medicine and planted the seeds for his research mindset.

Nguyen’s interest in research began well before medical school. As an undergraduate, he conducted research at LSU’s Veterinary School, focusing on diabetes and sperm cell motility. He later worked in engineering and research roles for biotech and biopharmaceutical companies, with a focus on gene therapies. While that work highlighted the large-scale impact science can have, Nguyen found himself wanting a more direct human connection.

That desire ultimately reinforced his decision to pursue medicine, where research could inform care at both the individual and population levels. During medical school, his research interests continued to evolve. He gained experience in laboratory settings, worked with unique databases, and developed a strong interest in statistics and data analysis. Throughout his clinical years, Nguyen actively contributed to case reports, sharpening his clinical reasoning and his ability to discern patterns that guide evidence-based care.

When he arrived at ��Ӱ��, Nguyen already knew that research would be central to his medical education. Encouraged by mentors and driven by curiosity, he sought out faculty connections and research opportunities early on. He credits ��Ӱ��’s faculty for being approachable and supportive, whether helping students get started in a lab or guiding them toward topics aligned with their interests.

Nguyen points to several faculty mentors who played key roles in his development, including Randy Aldret, EdD; Michael Rommen, DO; and Matthew Overturf, PhD. Each provided guidance while allowing him the autonomy to lead projects and learn through experience. That balance helped him grow not only as a researcher but also as a future physician.

Nguyen’s research focuses on analyzing health and injury patterns using publicly available databases and clinical case studies. By identifying trends, his work aims to improve patient care, safety, recovery, and overall quality of life. Drawn to research with practical impact, he is expanding his focus towards physical medicine, seeking to advance outcomes for patients suffering injuries or functional impairments.

Among his most memorable research experiences at ��Ӱ�� was an early project examining whether intima-media thickness in peripheral arteries, a measure of blood vessel wall thickness, was associated with coronary artery plaque burden, or the amount of fatty buildup present in the arteries that supply blood to the heart. The project required long hours in the lab tediously working with cadaver blood vessels, which had to be preserved and embedded in paraffin wax for careful slicing and examination under a microscope. Nguyen recalls the process with humor. It produced plenty of wax shavings and messes along the way, creating what he called a “Louisiana snowstorm.” More meaningful to him, however, was leading and publishing a study on monkey bar injuries in the Journal of Osteopathic Pediatrics. The project was both challenging and rewarding, requiring adaptability, teamwork, and persistence in the face of unexpected obstacles.

Pursuing the DO with Research Distinction at ��Ӱ��

Nguyen is pursuing the DO degree with Research Distinction, a pathway designed for students who want to integrate research into their medical education. The program allows students to develop skills in evidence-based medicine, critical thinking, and scholarly writing while working closely with ��Ӱ��’s clinical or biomedical faculty mentors. Through sustained research involvement, students gain comprehensive experience that prepares them for future roles in academic medicine, clinical practice, or research-focused careers.

For Nguyen, the program aligns perfectly with his goals. It provides a structured framework for pursuing meaningful research while reinforcing the principles of osteopathic medicine and patient-centered care.

Nguyen does not take lightly the honor of being named Student Researcher of the Year. He sees it as recognition not only of outcomes but also of persistence through the setbacks, revisions, and rejections that are part of the research process. The honor has strengthened his motivation to continue asking better questions and producing work that can make a difference.

Looking ahead, Nguyen hopes to incorporate research into a career in physical medicine and rehabilitation, focusing on clinical and outcomes-based projects that blend

osteopathic principles, movement, and individualized care. His advice to fellow students interested in research is straightforward: stay academically grounded, start early, collaborate, seek mentorship, and share your work through presentations and conferences.

Through curiosity, dedication, and a commitment to meaningful impact, Justin Nguyen exemplifies the spirit of research at ��Ӱ��-Louisiana and the promise of physician-scientists in osteopathic medicine.

Two ��Ӱ��-Carolinas students are gaining national research experience while representing the College on an international stage.

Camila Pacocha and Shadika Panta, both members of the Class of 2028, recently presented their research at the Keystone Symposia Conference: Spotlight on the Cancer Cell. The prestigious conference brings together leading scientists and researchers to share advances in cancer biology and emerging discoveries shaping the future of treatment and understanding of the disease.

The students are conducting their ongoing research under the mentorship of Bidyut Mohanty, PhD, ��Ӱ��-Carolinas discipline chair and associate professor for cell biology and physiology. Through his guidance, Camila and Shadika developed and presented their work among experts and innovators in the field.

��Ӱ��-Carolinas dean Matthew Cannon, DO, praised both the students and their mentor.

“I am extremely proud of Dr. Mohanty’s leadership and his body of work in working with these two students, Camila and Shadika, on this research and the conference presentation,” said Dr. Cannon.

For Camila and Shadika, the conference offered more than just a platform to present—it provided a glimpse into the broader research community and the future of cancer science.

The conference was a fantastic experience for Shadika and me, and we learned so much. The research world is vast, and so many of the people we met and the talks we listened to had such profound ideas and data. We hope that we were good representatives for ��Ӱ�� in the research world and are excited to see where it will go!

Registration begins at 8:00 AM, and the keynote speaker will begin at 9:00 AM CST. Lunch will be provided for attendees. The event will conclude by 3:00pm.

Student Presentations

A limited number of students will be chosen by the Via Research Recognition Day Committee to deliver oral poster presentations highlighting exceptional research. These presentations will be featured as part of the afternoon agenda.

How do I participate?

Attendees are invited to share their research in poster format. Poster abstracts must be accepted for posters to be displayed at the event. The Via Research Recognition Day features an optional student poster competition in the following categories: Biomedical Research, Clinical Research, Clinical Case Reports, Educational Research, and Simulation Research.

Abstract Submission Form

Abstracts must be submitted electronically using the Abstract Submission Form linked above by Friday, December 5th, 2025, at 5 PM CST.

Please note: In the interest of professionalism and fairness, no extensions for abstract submission will be granted.

For questions about abstract submissions or participation in the poster competition, please email researchday-auburn@vcom.edu.

When an abstract is accepted, the submitting author will receive further instructions for poster submission via email by Tuesday, December 16, 2025. Posters will be due by January 15th, 2026, at 5pm CST.

��Ӱ�� provides free poster printing for any meeting attendee with an accepted abstract. Details will be sent to submitting authors with the abstract acceptance email.

All projects presented for Research Day must be approved by an appropriate Institutional Review Board (IRB), reviewed and determined to be exempt, or determined not to meet the regulatory definition of human subjects research.

Research Day is a significant event for ��Ӱ�� and supports the mission of the College to provide medical education and research that prepares globally-minded, community-focused physicians and improves the health of those most in need.

What will this conference offer?

The Via Research Recognition Day is a forum for health professionals and scientists at academic institutions, teaching hospitals and practice sites to present or benefit from new research innovations and programs intended to improve the health of all humans. By attending the oral presentations and poster sessions, participants will have the opportunity to learn cutting edge information in the physiological bases of osteopathic manipulative therapy efficacy, new trends in physician-based research networks, and how to develop innovative research projects with high impact for human health. By attending the poster session, participants will also learn about the biomedical, clinical and educational research activities at ��Ӱ�� and its partner institutions and will have an opportunity to identify new collaborative research opportunities.
